PREFACE
Alberto Sarina, author of these pages, wrote them to explain in a few simple words and a few things about this neighborhood, to make it clear to those who are not just small local events, customs and traditions of this neighborhood now known in many parts of the world.
The story will explain some of the facts and ways of living in this small village, but very particular part of Rome.
LITTLE STORY OF A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD
A BIT OF HISTORY
Rome is defined for centuries the city of seven hills, but it is said that the eighth hill of Rome was right where now is the our Garbatella, because the eighth? Because it was built on a hill that has nothing to envy the other seven.
It established way back in, but not too much, February 1920 King Vittorio Emanuele 3rd laid the foundation stone
marking the birth of our district, as proof of this there is a walled insertion of a central building in Piazza Benedetto Brin.
This maturing over time its infrastructure has been upgraded Ward Rome-
It is located just outside the Aurelian walls bordered to the west by the river port on the Tiber River, which served as the first port for supplies by sea from the Mediterranean cities, the city of Rome, the other from the northwest district bordering Testaccio, to east and south by the district ardeatino district E. u. r Sao Paulo. Today the Garbatella district is increasingly in the process of expansion and modernization, already equipped with good infrastructure; has an efficient underground station line B, bus lines that are easily reach any point in the center of Rome is full of shops (for all budgets), small artisans who still profess their job with care, churches, schools, stands out much new teaching center, in the square Oderico from Pordenone, where you take courses to students of all ages from all over the world, from public and private schools up to universities; the third state of Rome, well-deserved, the redevelopment of District of Rome.
All its special features architecture that has always attracted students and connoisseurs and
It has not escaped the sensitivity of writers like Pasolini who has credited his finest novel and
directors such as Nanni Moretti who shot scenes for his Dear Diary and its historic sentence (for me the most beautiful district of Rome is the Garbatella), television with its endless fiction Cesaroni.
At the time it was entrusted to the genius and imagination of young architects in competition with one another, built this district in the houses at the human dimension, the neighborhood was equipped with large equipment for the time, the public baths of which traces remain in the same Garbatella.
The first core of the district was born divided into groups of blocks more or less small with adjoining gardens, close to each other as they appear today, so you get to see from a window to the other purposes of rolled steel for drying clothes in the sun and wind-
A spring is wonderful to see inside these perimeters outlined by small walls of tuff bricks, invaded and dominated by old trees and creepers, over bushes of roses, lilies and fruit trees in blossom, run by people who live in these Lots-
For those not in the area, everything seems just a green fence that would complement each lot.
The urge (.... And you should do! ") To enter by walking among the people who live there; They would meet mostly small groups of women whispering sessions outdoors, for children to play (...source of future friendships healthy and durable. . .) -
All they tell willingly and give explanations about the customs of the lots, without distinction with all-
THE BED & BREAKFAST
Our b & b, born to a bet the owner: myself.
One day I said to myself: I want to see if I can make this a home through contact with other people of different nationalities also.
Apparently, I have succeeded and I guarantee that it is pleasant.
The building in which it is located overlooking Via the Seven Churches, the number 132, the way perhaps most important, historically the neighborhood.
Start from the ancient Appian Way, the road is very important for her past, which was used as is known to unite much of Italy.
Earlier this street there are the catacombs of San Callisto and from there part of our way, winds towards the Garbatella in a harmonious view flanked on both right and left by trees, vegetation and comes before the catacombs of Santa Domitilla, it is said the largest of Rome, also including a basilica formed on four underground levels and is home to about 150 burials.
Continuing for several kilometers, the road reaches the catacombs of Commodilla and goes to finish the square of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.
It is said that the building that houses this b & b was built above the underground tunnels of the catacombs; In fact, if we're going to see the old floor plans of the territory we will find that the building in which we host is in perfect line with the itinerary of the catacombs.
Through these tunnels early Christians persecuted by the Romans could escape the reprisals of the centurions and vanish in a completely different part.
LEGEND
Earlier Via Roberto De Nobili, in Piazza Giovanni From Triora, about a hundred meters from us, there is
the now famous bars of Cesaroni, the well-known television drama with its magnificent staircase.
Receiving dozens if not hundreds of visitors a day, children accompanied by their parents and very young couples who are photographed in front of the banner of this bar, a popular destination and throw a bit of modern folklore in the district.
In the middle of Via Roberto De Nobili, following the descent you arrive in Piazza Ricoldo From Montecroce, a small Terrace features a grand staircase to the right and a fountain in the middle of it
FOUNTAIN CARLOTTA.
The staircase very impressive to us neighborhood kids seemed challenged us: "Let's see if you'll make it by to do it all at once without stopping ever"
There is only one born and raised in Garbatella that do not know the story
The gentle
It is said that just near this fountain is to erect a building type cowshed, that is shed for animals, which was transformed over time into a tavern in a shelter for wayfarers and pilgrims sellers ambulanti- (in those days there were in these places just archaeological sites and woods) -
The landlady was a beautiful girl young age; where he lived for the other was born and raised.
It was the perfect beauty and manner which made her very kind as well as the most beautiful girl of the most courted Roman countryside.
He did not deny never a smile or a word of comfort to anyone, in fact more often than not, the travelers were standing hours in the hope of being able to communicate with her they called the Garbata.
Telling stories to children or personal stories so that even the adults were there to listen.
Simple people, religious and peaceful these travelers and sellers of wine, grapes, olive oil, eggs....;
In those times so far transport, as you know were the "carts" drawn by horses or mules, donkeys; it still applies the purely Roman said: burini Lazio them know down the mountain (the Roman castles) cor ass and if I know them all well tycoon co zoccoli-
Being forced to do every time the journey from the capital, Rome, passing came near the inn, for thirst or fatigue to rest the donkeys, they stopped at the inn of this beautiful girl.
Only her vision often lit envy for those who were served first and occasionally lit small but check disputes.
Always tells the legend (.... But so was....) that from these assiduous, colored stops at this young hostess polite and nice to be stuck to the neighborhood, it was repeated so many times that it was born as Garbatella.
One day they went to a knight riding a beautiful white horse, accompanied by one hundred bodyguards (no one ever knew his name. . .) Near the inn Knight ordered his soldiers dismount and rest given who had a long and grueling.
It created a lot of confusion around the inn.
The travelers regulars became confused and retreated with their crying children and frightened aside
but in the middle of the hustle and bustle our Garbatella left the inn and so always polite but proud, the knight looked at his face and ordered him to him and his soldiers and civilians ways more decorous.
The rider was struck by her beauty but even more by the proud, though troubled, boldness of the girl and asked to be forgiven and his soldiers.
Accomplished the break, but the knight departed not long after he returned.
Young garbatella was still there.... took her in his arms and carried her away.
It is said that even now the full moon, it looks like a knight ride with his beloved in the clouds and the roofs of lots of Garbatella.
We Garbatella like scramble these facts of history, legend and folklore of old and new that shed a bit of romance on our first ever District, like even more to remember, and pass on to believe that even the imagination really happened.
We invite you therefore, to know him more closely.
We wait.

We really enjoyed our stay at La Fontana di Carlotta. It was comfortable, quiet, airy (with air conditioning - hooray!), clean, with a small coffee machine just outside with some simple pastries and a really good shower. Our hosts, Ray and Alberto and their family, were the very definition of care. And now we can understand why they love the Garbetella area (thanks for your little book about it, Alberto) - a nearby metro, and the most fabulous, affordable, family-run pizzeria just 2 streets away to relax after a day of walking everywhere in this amazing city. Thank you!

Alberto, the manager of the B&B, was very courteous and helpful with us. For any doubts, he was able to advise us and made breakfast available to us, even though it was not included in our booking formula. He managed to find us a place to have dinner in a restaurant where we would have never been able to find a spot on our own. For us, Alberto was a legend. We had a wonderful and especially fun evening. Thank you Alberto! See you soon, greetings from Alessandro and Chiara.

Truly excellent, the area is beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. The B&B is close to the metro, Garbatella metro B1 stop; therefore, Circus Maximus, Pyramid, Colosseum, and Termini for line change are very close. The structure is very clean. We saw the owner little, but it is evident that he is a nice and friendly person. Breakfast was not included, but we had coffee, tea, and some snacks available for free. Highly recommended.

We stayed at La Fontana di Carlotta for two nights. The location is strategic and optimal, in the Garbatella area, a true Roman gem. What I liked most about the property is the cleanliness and the care in maintaining it. The manager was very clear and kind, he even prepared a small breakfast for us on both days of our stay, which unfortunately we could not enjoy the first morning because it was taken by another B&B client. I would happily return. Recommended.

I was a guest at La Fontana di Carlotta for the first weekend of July 2017. It was recommended to me by friends who live in Garbatella and had already heard very good things about it. Due to my work needs, I arrived on Via delle Sette Chiese a bit later than the expected check-in time. The family managing the property made me feel very welcome despite my delay. I was assigned the room called Agrippina, remarkable. The space was well utilized and furnished. Maximum functionality and, I must say, also elegance. Not to mention the cleanliness and breakfast treatment. Being summer and hot, I ate little but when I return next December, I will have the opportunity to taste everything they offer. It has become a established tradition for me to visit Rome twice a year: before summer (like May) and before Christmas (like the Immaculate Conception bridge). I have already booked for this December 2017. And don't talk to me about other facilities after having known and appreciated this one. The owner Alberto is a force of nature and his wife is no less. Very capable people it was a pleasure to meet. Quality people are easily recognizable.

Every now and then I come back to Rome for work and the last time my agency booked this excellent Bed and Breakfast. Few but essential words, courtesy and availability of Mr. Alberto, cleanliness, great location to reach the center, parking but above all the breakfast in the morning. Not packaged snacks but the croissants with a capital C that Mr. Alberto produces. I hope to come back. Thank you for everything.

Very positive experience in this B&B! Cleanliness, private bathroom, discretion, comfort, warm, harmonious, nice environment, well-furnished with taste in its simplicity, bright, quiet. Even if only for one night, I appreciated the whole structure, also for its geographical position, close to the Lazio Region Palace, the educational center and not too far from Termini Station, reachable by taxi at reasonable costs. Excellent breakfast, varied and abundant! The manager is happy if he can make you happy, trying to meet your requests as much as possible.
