Description
The farm house, immersed in the countryside of Eastern Sicily, surrounded by an historic biological citrus garden, offers accommodations in restored rural houses. From the property, guests can enjoy a magnificent view of Mount Etna, Taormina and the sea. The most famous tourist attractions and locations, interesting from an archeological and natural point of view, are just few minutes away.

The family managed farm house offers accommodation in rural houses that have been completely restored by using materials typical of the island of Sicily (like the Sicilian tiles, lava stone and chestnut wood) and they are furnished carefully and traditionally. From the property guests can enjoy a magnificent view of the sea, of Mount Etna, of the city of Taormina and the Calabrian coast line.

In particular, the property offers double rooms that can accommodate up to 3-4 people, some of them are joined and perfect for families and friends, as well as large suites with frescos and a panoramic terrace.

Guests have also access to: common living area with satellite TV, Conference Room, kitchen, wireless internet connection, possibility of consulting informative material on location, parking. Inside the property there is also a palmento, used in the past for wine production that has recently been restored and is accessible to the guests.

At breakfast guests can enjoy kumquat and orange marmalades, home made fruit preserves and honey produced on location. Guests who spend the night can enjoy high quality local restaurants and inns in the small town of San Leonardello, where they will be able to taste typical Sicilian dishes prepared with traditional recipes. Many are the D. O. C. wines produced with grapes cultivated on Mount Etna as well as samples of the famous Sicilian pastry art.

The property offers the guests the possibility of choosing and purchasing natural and home made products such as lemons, kumquat, vegetables and seasonal fruits, eggs, dried fruits. The property makes also limoncello, as well as a kumquat and orange liquor, preserves and honey.

The farm house produces all its products by following the methods of the biological agriculture and it is certified by ICEA.

On location guests can request the following services: cooking classes where guests will learn how to prepare typical Sicilian dishes using all biological products; beekeeping classes with a visit to the bee hives; yoga classes; environmental courses; courses designed for students and school groups; boat excursions along the Ionic coast; personalized excursions; guided tours of museums, local artisans' laboratories and tourist itineraries in the areas of Eastern Sicily, under the guidance of expert personnel.

Guests can participate in cultural, agricultural and sport activities thanks to the ping pong table, the mountain bikes, the playground, the small domestic zoo and they will also have access to beach umbrellas. It is possible also to go trekking on Mount Etna and to visit the Etna caves, after a short introduction to geology.

br> The property is located in the area of San Leonardello, only 3 Kilometers away from the Giarre highway exit and, thanks to its strategic position, allows easy access to all the main tourist locations of Eastern Sicily and the surrounding areas.

In particular some of the areas guests are able to visit by staying at the farmhouse are: Acireale and the Aci (10 Km), baroque city located on a lava terrace overlooking the sea and famous thermal center, the Acireale Timpa, a natural reserve (8 Km), made of lava rocks overlooking the ocean, 7 kilometers long and entirely covered by vegetation, the natural reserve of the Cyclopes islands, the Riviera of the Cyclopes, Catania (26 Km), ancient city rich of interesting sites such as the Cathedral, the elephant fountain, the municipal palace, the university square, the Via Etnea, the Ursino Castle, the Via dei Crociferi etc; Taormina (25 Km), located on a hill overlooking the sea, famous for its landscape, its beaches, its archeological sites in particular the Greek Theatre that has been beautifully preserved; Mount Etna Park (18 Km); the ski lifts (35 km); the towns on Mount Etna, from 5 to 30 Km Milo, Linguaglossa, S. Alfio (Castagno of 100 horses), Trecastagni, Nicolosi; a golf course (30 km); the Alcantara River Park (24 Km); the Simeto Oasis (30 Km); the Fiumefreddo Oasis (20 Km); Armerina Square (110 km); Siracusa (95 Km), Noto (115 km).

Among the beauties of the area the sea is definitely one of the most important. The coast line offers a variety of beaches, the closest one being a pebble beach located about 3 kilometers from the property (Praiola-Carrubba), and followed on the northern side by Fondachello (10 minutes by car), a very long pebble beach; going towards north, there is the sandy beach of Marina di Cottone.

On the southern part towards Catania, the coast line is characterized by lava stones and it took shaped during the course of the centuries by the friction between the lava and the sea water (Stazzo, S. Tecla, S. Maria La Scala, Acitrezza, Acicastello). Further south from Catania the beautiful Playa beach is located, with its fine and yellow sand.

Hey from Vera e Saria

We are Vera and Saria Calabretta, and since we were little we have breathed in the scent of orange blossom, the flower of the lemon tree. The love for these places has led us to want to continue a story rich in emotions and traditions. These lands on the slopes of Etna were bought at the end of the 1800s by our grandfather Rosario Calabretta, a descendant of a family of citrus exporters.

Many of the plants still present in the garden are the same ones planted and cared for with love and passion by our grandfather. In the early 1900s lemon cultivation was so predominant in this part of Sicily that the whole Ionian area is still called the ‘lemon Riviera’.

Since 2000, thanks to an idea of our parents and driven by the desire to share and enhance this place that is dear and special to us, we have decided to start an agritourism activity. The houses that now welcome our guests were the country houses where the family used to gather and spend most of the summerWe are very proud to preserve this historic garden and have decided to produce by limiting the environmental impact according to the method of organic cultivation (ICEA certification).

Environmental sustainability and the desire to preserve the history of this place have always guided our choices.

In a beautiful coastline, where the diversity is surprising, there is a succession of bays with crystal-clear waters, where from south to north white sandy beaches give way to pebble beaches. You can relax on one of the many beaches that follow northwards to the picturesque Isola Bella on the coast of Taormina.
The nearest beach is pebbly and is 3 km from the farm (Praiola- Carrubba). Further north are Marina di Cottone, 10 minutes away, and San Marco, 15 minutes away, which are extensive pebble beaches. Twenty minutes by car you can enjoy the sea at Taormina, a true pearl of the Mediterranean.
Moving southwards towards Catania, the coast is characterised by lava cliffs formed over the centuries by the contact between the magma of the eruptions and the sea water, where the black of the rock stands out against a cobalt blue expanse. It is framed by ancient tuna-fishing nets, picturesque fishing villages, nature reserves and volcanic rock cliffs, on which you can visit Norman castles.
A few kilometres away are the villages of Torre Archirafi, Pozzillo, Stazzo, Santa Tecla, S. Maria la Scala, the protected marine reserve “Isole dei Ciclopi” with the mythological stacks of Acitrezza (15 km) and Acicastello with its Norman castle (18 km). A little further south of Catania you will be enchanted by the expanses of fine sand of the playa and the beaches of the Syracuse area.

The Agriturismo San Leonardello is a charming and lovely place with a welcoming and very friendly family as hosts. The grounds are beautiful with lots of lemon- (and other) trees, charming simple rooms, a delicious homemade breakfast, a very nice pool and stunning views of Mount Etna, the sea and Taormina. It is a rather quiet place (apart from the lovely but during the nights incessantly barking dog), which we love, and a good starting point for trips to Catania, the Etna, Taormina and many more delightful places. We also drove to Caltagirone, where the famous ceramics are made and to beautiful Syracuse. We personally would have liked it if there would have been a nice little village with some cafés one could reach on foot and have some nice walks, but the next village doesn't offer much in that respect and I would not recommend walking the small distance along the small yet quite frequented and dangerous road. So if you don't mind either taking the car for everything you want to do outside the Agriturismo or spending lots of time on the grounds of it, which would have been absolutely lovely had the weather been better (we had the bad luck of being there during the recent "Medicane" with lots of rain and thunderstorms), this is a wonderful place to be, a proper little paradise. I can only praise the owners for their friendliness and the care they take to make the place special and charming and to suggest special destinations to their guests - it was always a pleasure talking to them!

We loved this place. It is perfect for families - my children are 12, 10 and 8 years old. The host Vera was so friendly and helpful and gave us an incredibly warm welcome to Sicily. The property is surrounded by lemon groves, fig trees, olive trees and has gorgeous sea views as well as Mount Etna. The shared pool is lovely and mostly we had it to ourselves. The breakfasts and optional evening meals were superb. Opportunities to do a cooking course there too. The main road is quite near but doesn’t really detract from the charm of the place. My daughter loved their pet dogs particularly 16 yr old Lulu! The location is perfect for day trips to the gorgeous volcanic coastline, excursions to Mount Etna, Taormina, Catania, wine-tasting, Etnaland (children’s adventure park) Highly recommended.
