The Grandparents' Retreat is located just 11 km from Bagnoregio, in the charming village of San Michele in Teverina, an ancient medieval settlement that is part of the municipality of Civitella d’Agliano. This delightful spot overlooks the final section of the Calanchi Valley and the Tiber Valley, providing a stunning view of Umbria.
The accommodation is a section of a historic farmhouse that was completely renovated in 2005. Like many farmhouses in this region, it spans three levels, with each floor featuring spacious rooms connected by steep stairs typical of traditional architecture. It is worth noting that the stairs have high risers and narrower treads; therefore, if you are traveling with small children or have mobility issues, this should be taken into consideration.
On the ground floor, you will find the dining area, which includes a kitchenette, a small refrigerator (with a mini freezer), and a washing machine. The first floor contains the bedroom and bathroom, which feature a double bed, a single bed, and a foldable slatted bed, accommodating a total of four guests.
From the bedroom, a door leads to a second flight of stairs that takes you to the second floor, where you will discover an attic with views of the Calanchi Valley! This space is furnished to serve as both a living room/relaxation area (with a sofa bed) and a second bedroom, equipped with three beds and an additional bed that can be easily set up with an electric air mattress.
The farmhouse is surrounded by expansive grounds, characterized by a typical countryside lawn, an olive grove, and a spring, creating a serene atmosphere.
In the vicinity, just 200 meters away, you will find a church, a bus stop, bars, and restaurants in a populated area. Within less than 1 km, there are ATMs, a supermarket, and a pharmacy, while the nearest hospital is located more than 10 km away.

My family and I stayed at the end of June. The structure is as you see it: it feels like taking a very pleasant plunge into the past, everything truly smells like a grandparents' house and this is a very pleasant sensation. The house is immersed in greenery in a very quiet area. The manager kept apologizing for the poor care of the garden, while we found the spaces very welcoming and the fact that everything around was so spontaneous and "rustic" was an added value for us. The hostess was also very helpful in providing us with all the indications of places to visit nearby and where to eat. We will definitely recommend it!

Unfortunately, this establishment completely disappointed our expectations, except for the cleanliness and friendliness of the manager. Clean but dark rooms, a garden full of mosquitoes making it impossible to stay there, with only a small table and two chairs. It is untidy and poorly maintained. This establishment is only suitable as a base because, moreover, it is 15 minutes from the only village with all the services. It is located in San Michele in Teverina and not in Civitella d'Agliano as indicated.

Gent. ma signora Tavella, a seguito della nostra cordiale telefonata (per cui ci dispiace molto che la struttura abbia disatteso le vostre aspettative) ci preme fare alcune precisazioni: - Il paese di san Michele in Teverina è riportato nella descrizione che tutti possono leggere: “ Il Rifugio dei Nonni è situato a soli 11 km da Bagnoregio, nel suggestivo borgo di San Michele in Teverina, un antico villaggio medievale che fa parte del comune di Civitella d'Agliano”. Abbiamo anche specificato che il paese è semi-abitato come i tanti di questa zona. Bagnoregio si trova così lontano ma il paese più vicino CON TUTTI I NEGOZI è, appunto, Civitella d’Agliano (comune del quale san Michele fa parte) distante circa 1 km. - In giardino, oltre al tavolinetto, vi sono un divanetto a due posti, due poltroncine (tipico arredamento da giardino), e un ombrellone; non due misere sedioline. Sono 4 posti come le persone che in media ospitiamo. Allegheremo, per correttezza, la foto. - Purtroppo per l’esterno abbiamo candele e spiralette alla citronella che avrete sicuramente visto nel mobiletto posto all’entrata della sala da pranzo; inoltre in bagno offriamo spray come protezione preventiva. Questa è una zona di “campagna quasi bosco” e non ci è facile tenere sotto controllo le zanzare d’estate. Provvederemo ad aumentare il numero dei rimedi, magari aggiungendo anche lampade a led, per cui vi ringraziamo per questa osservazione e ci scusiamo vivamente per le troppe zanzare. - Come specificato, vi è una parte del casale (con relativa zona verde) non di nostra proprietà, che è chiusa ed è in vendita; non possiamo prendercene cura come vorremmo per rendere TUTTO il verde circostante più curato. Questa è la causa dell’ effetto … “quasi boscaglia” che restituisce una parte del verde. - Le camere hanno una o due finestre come gli antichi casali, che non possono essere modificate per il “vincolo paesaggistico”. Nessuno prima d’ora le aveva trovate così buie ma sicuramente molto fresche, per via dei muri in tufo molto spessi. Ci dispiace tanto che le abbiate trovate poco luminose! - Ci fa piacere che abbiate apprezzato la cura nella pulizia e il nostro desiderio di ascoltare cordialmente le vostre critiche per cercare di recepirle in modo costruttivo, e migliorare ogni aspetto risultato a voi sgradevole e che è nelle nostre possibilità migliorare! - Per una restituzione più completa possibile, ci pare giusto che la vostra recensione sia integrata con quanto (di diverso) altri ospiti hanno scritto, ad esempio su google maps….
