points of interest in San Gemini
Archaeological Site Carsulae
Carsulae is, without doubt, one of the most fascinating archaeological area of Umbria for the beauty of the monuments and for the landscape around. The ruins of the Roman town is not far from Terni and from the medieval village of San Gemini, well-known for the Springs.
The Carsulae archaeological site, in the Province of Terni, rises on the Monti Martani plateau (440 metres high). It includes the archaeological site of the Carsulae ancient town and the “Umberto Ciotti” Visiting and Documentation Centre, where you can find the ticket-office, the bookshop, a children’s play area, the “Cinzia Perissinotto” room concerning studies on the lower Umbrian territory, a didactical room and a permanent exhibition of some archaeological finds brought to the light during the excavation campaigns.
Carsulae, only in part brought to the light, is on the western branch of the ancient Via Flaminia. The urban renovation dates back to the III b.C. Abandoned around the IV A.D., the urban planning of the Augustan Age is almost preserved: the travertine stones of the ancient via Flaminia, the two Twin Temples, the Amphitheatre, the Theatre, the Arch of S. Damian and the Monumental Tombs.
In the Middle Ages a religious community lived there, situated along an itinerary that later become a Franciscan route, as testifies the Church of Ss. Cosma and Damiano, built on the pre-existent Roman building.
Carsulae offers services for a cultural tourism: guided tours, thematic tours, excursions, didactical and play-activities (for further information, visit the website www.carsulae.it). “U. Ciotti” Visiting and Documentation Centre has, moreover, some rooms suitable for conferences, workshops and events.
Near the site, there is also a coffee bar and a small restaurant. The parking is free and suitable for cars and busses.
