The B&B Foresteria dell'Abbazia is a historic residence that is part of the monastic complex of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel, founded in the mid-11th century to accommodate travelers and pilgrims who requested hospitality at the monastery. It is located in the heart of the historical center of Montescaglioso, near Porta S. Angelo, where tratturi and paths converge that, after crossing the "Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera," reach Matera - the city of the Sassi - recently proclaimed European Capital of Culture 2019, only 12 km away.

The property has significant historical and architectural relevance both for its construction typology and for the external finishes that reflect the architectural style of the monastery. It enjoys suggestive views of the square in front of the monastery entrance.

All accommodations have a private bathroom, autonomous air conditioning/heating, free WiFi, minibar, safe, courtesy set, convenient free parking and many other comforts.

Central location next to a beautiful monastery. The hosts are very kind and helpful. New and well-maintained property. Good value for money,considering that there is always a space available for coffee/tea and snacks. The host always kept the parking space for us and we had a pass for the historic center (note: very narrow streets for large cars). Thank you Montescaglioso.

The structure is well made in an optimal position to visit the historic center. The manager Antonio is simply kind and very helpful, excellent cleaning. I had already been there and returned for the reasons described above.

I highly recommend staying in this magnificent place. Everything was perfect and the building was very beautiful. We were warmly welcomed by Antonio, and thank you for his advice on visits and restaurants. Large room for 3 people, magnificent bathroom super clean. The Foresteria dell'Abbazia is a very welcoming and well-managed structure, located within a historic village of great charm. The view over the Murge from the nearby Porta S.Angelo is spectacular. Recommended the guided tour of the Abbey: the guide is very knowledgeable and allows you to see and understand service areas not accessible on a personal tour. The quality/price ratio of the Foresteria is excellent. The structure does not have its own parking but it is possible to arrange in advance to park where a pass is needed. Excellent management and cleanliness. Strategic position between Matera and the sea. Breakfast in a pastry bar just a few steps away, with exquisite pastries.

This place is a gem. My wife and I had the most wonderful time staying at the Foresteria dell'Abbazia! Both Antonio and Elisa were so helpful and accommodating during our stay. The room we stayed in was spacious and very comfortable, with a beautiful view overlooking the Abbazia right in the center of the historic center of Montescaglioso. We also opted for breakfast at the Barlume cafe, which was phenomenal. We already cannot wait to return. Thank you so much, Antonio and Elisa!

The Foresteria dell'Abbazia exceeded our expectations. The structure is new and equipped with everything needed. The owner, Mr. Antonio, is a perfect host, full of care and attention. In the town of Montescaglioso, one breathes an air of other times, a real antidote to the frenzy of life in big cities. Everyone knows each other and there is a propensity for availability towards each other. A special mention goes to two young locals, volunteers at the local tourist office. Upon our request for tourist information, they offered to personally accompany us to visit the abbey and take a stroll in the town center, telling us its history.
