The pictoresque National Park of the Gargano is just a few kilometers away from the province city of Foggia.
The unspoiled limestone promontory is charming and unique for its uncontaminated nature and its various landscapes. Here the visitor has many alternatives for a pleasant holiday at the lakes of Lesina and Varano, at the seaside resorts of Peschici, Vieste and at the Tremiti Islands with lots of opportunities for outdoors sport-activities. For a day outing S. Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant'Angelo, the two most famous religious sites in the western world are worth seeing, the first known for the capuchin friar Padre Pio who suffered the stigmata, the wounds of the crucified Christ and the latter for its storied sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel.
Atop its cliffside perch, Peschici dominates the beach below and the coast with its marvelous grottos, coves and inlets; Vieste is one of the oldest Dauni towns and well worth exploring with its tunneled streets, arcades, winding lanes, ancient tombs, Swabian castles, churches and sanctuaries.
Off the northern coast of the Gargano lie the small Tremiti islands, a marine preserve and a true paradise for divers.
