Description
Palazzo del Mercante is a charming historic residence located just a few meters from Piazza Grande, in the heart of Montepulciano's old town. It features six beautifully renovated double rooms that perfectly blend antiquity with modernity.
The palace derives its name from the street it is situated on: Via Ricci, formerly known as Via della Mercanzia.
This building is of historical significance and is protected as a monument. An ancient coat of arms belonging to the Minerbetti family, a noble Florentine family who lived in the palace around the 13th century, can be found on the facade. The emblem displays three silver daggers pointing downward, arranged in a fan shape.
The renovation work was carried out with care and respect for the original structure. The typical exposed wooden beams of Tuscany were preserved in the rooms, and materials such as wood and travertine were utilized. The addition of modern elements, however, has created a space that feels airy and comfortable.
The uniqueness of Palazzo del Mercante undoubtedly lies in its prime location and the stunning views that can be enjoyed from all six rooms.
The Panoramic rooms each feature two large windows, offering a breathtaking view of Montepulciano from above, including its Renaissance rooftops and historic churches, the Val di Chiana, Lake Trasimeno, and Lakes Montepulciano and Chiusi, extending all the way to the Tuscan Apennines.
On the other hand, the Mercante Superior and Poliziano Classic rooms overlook Via Ricci, providing a distinctive view of the more hidden streets of Montepulciano and the small chapel of S. Antonio, which is now the headquarters of the Contrada di Talosa.

Palazzo del Mercante is a family run historical residence. Our family has worked in this sector since 35 years, when Gabriella and her father Marsilio opened one of the first Bed and Breakfast in Montepulciano, in the heart of the town centre.
Gabriella subsequently conveyed her passion to her husband Angelo, and together they passed it on their children: Simone, Cristina and Alessio, which now manage Palazzo del Mercante.
You will come across young and dynamic hosts, ready to accommodate any request and to disclose every secret of Montepulciano, leading you to the discovery of the two valleys that the town overlooks: Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana.
