Description
The Photojournalist's House is a place that holds a genuine history, closely linked to that of Portoferraio and the Island of Elba. The residence is part of the city's original urban core, developed between 1610 and 1640, and became part of the family in 1942 when grandfather Aurelio, a worker at the old Steel Plant and originally from the nearby Maremma, purchased it. Since then, it has remained a landmark for generations, bearing witness to a family story filled with migrations, work, and returns to an island cherished as a beloved home.
Today, the apartment retains this spirit, enriched by the experience of someone who has devoted their life to traveling and sharing the world through photography. The rooms reflect a curious and well-lived personality, offering guests the feeling of stepping into a real home, full of memories and character, rather than just a simple holiday rental.
The spaces are designed with great versatility: two main areas, which can be divided into three separate zones using a partition, allow the house to be easily adapted to the varying needs of guests. The four beds are integrated into stylish sofas, featuring two single beds and one double bed, keeping the rooms bright and welcoming during the day and transforming them into cozy bedrooms when needed. This practical and original solution combines functionality, atmosphere, and the pleasure of living in a historic home in the heart of Portoferraio.

My name is Federico Tovoli, and I am a professional photographer specializing mainly in photojournalism. I work for national and international periodical publications, institutions, and private companies, and I also teach photography. To learn more, here is the link to my professional website. I have been living in this house permanently since 1999. During the warmer months, I am often traveling for work—sometimes nearby, sometimes far away—engaged in assignments such as reportage, teaching, long-term projects, consulting, and other tasks. I consider myself a global citizen. On-site, there is a trusted assistant who helps with hospitality and local support.

Area city center
You are right in the heart of Portoferraio's historic center, which is considered the "capital" of the island of Elba. The urban area dates back to the early 1600s. Within a few minutes, you can reach Napoleon's Villa, and just as quickly, you can be by the waterfront. The street is quiet, yet all the city's nightlife is within easy reach, including bars, piano bars, restaurants, and a craft market. Napoleon's Villa is situated between two scenic Renaissance fortresses, and below it lies the Spiaggia delle Viste, the closest beach to the house. Just a short walk away is the Spiaggia delle Ghiaie.
