A small town, it was founded in 1606 by Count Baldassarre Naselli, who gave it the name of Aragona in honor of his mother Beatrice Aragona Branciforti. The small Piazza Umberto I is characterized by the massive bulk of the feudal Palace (one wing of which was the seat of the Town Hall), built between the 17th and 18th centuries and renovated in 1875, and by the baroque church of Purgatory. Not far away stands the Mother Church (17th century), whose single-nave interior houses a beautiful 18th-century wooden nativity scene with large figures. About 3 km south of the town, with a detour from the road to Agrigento, you reach the Macalube di Aragona Nature Reserve. The lunar landscape that suddenly opens up is made up of a clayey expanse crossed by cracks and dotted with small volcanoes a few centimetres high ("macalubbe" in Arabic) that alternately erupt greyish slime and puffs of methane gas: this is one of the most striking and suggestive manifestations of a rare geological phenomenon, already reported by Plato, known as "sedimentary volcanism".
