A SHORT HISTORY OF THE CITY
Due to the location in the connections between north and south Italy, Fano was destroyed by the Goths in 538 and rebuilt by the army of the Byzantine Belisarius and Narses. Later became part of the Maritime Pentapolis along with Ancona, Pesaro, Senigallia and Rimini. Subdued by the Lombards (Pipino) in 755, passed through him to the Church. In the twelfth century as a free city, acknowledged the supremacy of Venice in exchange for the protection of the Republic for its trade in the Adriatic. In the following century it was for a brief period under the rule of the Este after which he was torn apart by fighting between two families: Del Cassero and Da Carignano. At the end of the twelfth century the city came under the rule of the Malatesta of Rimini, was under the Malatesta’s lordship until 1463 when the Duke of Montefeltro recaptured it to the Church. Under Napoleon became part of the Italian kingdom and with the Congress of Vienna in 1815 it returned again to the State of the Church. In September of 1860, thanks to the forces of General Cialdini, joined the Kingdom of Italy.
