The Salis Palace
The Palazzo Salis is located in the north-eastern part of Chiavenna‘s historic centre, on the central Piazza Castello. Its history roots back to the 18th century when it was built by the Salis family from the Grisons as their city residence. Legend says that it was built as a more elegant and decorated contrast to the rather bare Castle Balbiani, which is opposite the Palazzo.
The Palazzo’s principle facade overlooking the garden as well as the sumptuous interiors bear witness to a pure demonstration of rare elegance and ease at the same time. The main part of the villa is represented by a beautiful reception hall which has a rectangular shape and spreads over two floors. Its walls are adorned with mouldings and frescoes offering visitors the possibility to experience a typically Venetian flair.
All the rooms of the palazzo, however, are designed in a Baroque style, kept in green and pink pastel shades, with ceilings richly adorned with Rococo frescoes and decorations. The floors are made of the characteristical stone “pietra ollare” or of marble laid out in black and white checkerboard pattern. A lovely garden with its centuries-old and shade-giving trees complete the unique atmosphere of the Palazzo.

The house is really very interesting and we felt a bit like castle owners. The only issue was the low water pressure in the shower, but that's the only thing we can complain about. The hostess was very nice, spoke English. We can only recommend the accommodation.

The accommodation, including the park, we liked very much. For 1 or 2 nights it's okay, simple and plain. We deliberately booked only 2 nights to experience a castle-like feeling. It is a very beautiful old historic building. We felt very comfortable. The operators are very friendly and attentive. It was a pity that the shower had little water and was also cold. Staying at the B&B Palazzo Salis in Chiavenna is a truly special experience. The building is very central, still in the old style and only subtly renovated where necessary, allowing you to step into the Rococo era, as if you were staying in a museum. It is clean. The garden is also beautiful. We were allowed to park the car in the garden. So the stay is a beautiful experience. The hospitality is very friendly and personal, the breakfast plentiful and delicious.\nIn line with the old building, there is less comfort than in a modern hotel, for example it is quite noisy, you can hear street noise. However, it is a very special experience!

This B&B is a spectacular historic estate that one can only dream of living in, and having the opportunity to stay there was like a dream come true. The owner is the kindest lady, and we enjoyed our stay with our 2 young daughters as much as we did. Its location is great because it is within walking distance of everything. I loathe the day I can come stay again.
