San Giovanni is one of those districts of Rome for which you could still use the adjective "authentic". The area abounds in Renaissance buildings that rise in the famous streets of Sanpietrini, among the few restored in the city, and wine bars with dim lights.
With a very characteristic appearance, the modern boulevards of San Giovanni lead to richly decorated cathedrals, often arousing the wonder of this contrast, while the culinary side of the neighborhood is centered on markets with local produce rather than restaurants, and entertainment activities take place in the parks, preferred to the locals.
San Giovanni is an invitation for today's inhabitants of Rome to compare and identify the different aspects that the history of the place highlights compared to the comforts of the present.
An area known throughout Italy because in the main square in front of the basilica, every 1st of May, there is the famous concert, which sees on stage a large number of Italian and foreign bands.
Next to the basilica is the Scala Santa (Holy Staircase), which according to tradition is composed of the 28 steps that Jesus used to walk to Pontius Pilate. At the top of the staircase there is the chapel called Sancta Sanctorum which preserves some of the most important Christian relics.
Let's not forget that the district of San Giovanni is known for one of the main streets of the city.
shopping with many affordable shops, Via Appia Nuova, and a lively clothing market present every morning, except Sunday, located in Via Sannio, where you can do great business!
