Area Appia
The Ardeatino neighborhood is mainly associated with the massacre of the Ardeatine Caves, the killing of 335 detainees that took place in Rome in March 1944, carried out by Nazi occupation troops. The execution took place precisely at the Ardeatine Caves, ancient quarries where the bodies were then hidden. Today that place has been transformed into a mausoleum in memory of those events and in memory of the victims.
The Ardeatino is the twentieth district of Rome and takes its name from the Ardeatina road. Located in the south of Rome, it was established in 1961 and has a very large area. With its more than 14 square kilometers, it is in fact one of the largest districts of the capital and is home to about 66,000 inhabitants.
The Ardeatino neighborhood stands out for the number of monuments present on its territory. Among these are the Basilica of San Sebastiano Fuori le Mura, the Church of the Annunziatella, and the Complex of the Tre Fontane Abbey. Among the places of interest there are also many historic houses and residences, military architectures - in particular the Ancient Appian Way Fort and the Ardeatina Fort - and important archaeological sites including catacombs and tombs of considerable interest. Among the best-known monuments in the area there are of course the aforementioned Mausoleum of the Ardeatine Caves and the Monument to the Montagnola Fallen.
In Ardeatino, there are also well-known and popular green areas. In particular, for a different day spent outdoors, there are the Regional Park of the Ancient Appian Way, the Tormarancia Estate, and the Zampa di Bove Estate.
Living in the Ardeatino neighborhood is also excellent from the point of view of the quality of life, services, and connections available. In particular, the main connecting roads with the surrounding area are Laurentina, Appia, and Cristoforo Colombo, while a dense network of bus lines constitutes the main alternative for those who prefer public transport.
