The current Chiaia district was founded in the sixteenth century, developing as a village outside the walls of the city of Naples, along the current riviera of Chiaia. It was only with the Risanamento (1860) that the district began to take on the appearance we know, with the filling and accommodation of the coastal area, which led to the construction of via Caracciolo, the current Lungomare which took the place of the Riviera di Chiaia and to the construction of the Amedeo district and via dei Mille.
The ideal walk among the most characteristic streets of the district starts from via Chiaia and then continue towards via Filangieri, vico Cavallerizza a Chiaia and vico Belledonne, animated both in summer and winter by the numerous designer shops, trendy and nice little restaurants.
Via Chiaia, which connects the ancient Spanish soul of Via Toledo and the new piedmontese soul of Via dei Mille, is one of the most famous and elegant streets of Naples, full of boutiques and characteristic shops but also of buildings of historical and architectural interest. . Particular is the triumphal arch-shaped bridge with an elevator inside one of the pillars. Anyone who is near Via Chiaia, can not eat one of the best pizzas in Naples at the Antica Pizzeria Brandi.
But the reference point of Chiaia is definitely the Caracciolo seafront, between Castel dell'Ovo and Posillipo, one of the most fascinating and romantic locations in the city where you can spend some relaxing hours taking advantage of the beauties of the Gulf of Naples and with a view of the Castel dell'Ovo, the oldest castle in Naples in front of the famous Santa Lucia district.
Via Caracciolo runs parallel to the Villa Comunale, a city park built by Carlo Vanvitelli at the end of the 18th century, and the Riviera di Chiaia, the oldest promenade in the city (born before the construction of Via Caracciolo), along which noble buildings were built. among which stands Villa Pignatelli, that of the Duke of San Teodoro, built by Guglielmo Bechi and the Carafa palace of Belvedere.
Via Caracciolo ends in Mergellina, where according to legend the current dragged the lifeless body of the siren Partenope. Even here the view is breathtaking: the hill of Posillipo, that of Vomero and in the distance the Vesuvius
