Hey from Emanuela

Hi there! My name is Emanuela, and I run Castello degli Ulivi together with my family. I'm delighted to welcome you to our countryside home and introduce you to our little corner of Calabria, a place still off the beaten track and far from mass tourism.

I love nature, the sea, tango, the scent of freshly baked bread, and the sound of rain on the windows in autumn. Our Castello is my heart's home, where I spent lots of lovely moments during my childhood: waking up to the birds singing, living a day at the slow pace of nature, relaxing in a hammock in the pine forest, counting sheep and lambs passing in front of the house twice a day to go grazing, listenig to the songs and prayers of the nearby evangelical center carried by the wind, the olive harvest and the satisfaction of tasting the new oil, green and pungent, on warm bread; preparing sausages and homemade pasta with my mother; tasting the new wine and "zeppole" on Saint Martin's Day; celebrating Easter and Christmas with loved ones.

I'll be happy to share all this and more with you.

Area countryside
The Castle of the Olives is located in Roccella Ionica, known as one of the most beautiful towns along the Jasmine Coast. This name refers to the coastal area of the province of Reggio Calabria, which is lapped by the Ionian Sea. The coastline stretches for 90 km, featuring low, sandy beaches often bordered by high cliffs that descend sharply into the sea, where well-equipped beach facilities have been established. The Riviera gets its name from the cultivation of the jasmine plant, a beautiful, delicate, and sturdy climbing plant that is widespread throughout the Reggio province and particularly typical of this area. The flowers, harvested from jasmine fields, were sold by weight and used in perfume production, with some even being exported to France. In 1928, the Experimental Station for Essences and Essential Oils was established in Reggio Calabria. Between Punta Stilo and Capo Spartivento lies a stretch of Calabrian coastline characterized by clay-marbled hills and green terraces rich in citrus groves and olive trees, reaching into the heart of the Aspromonte National Park. This strip of land includes 42 municipalities that offer a simple, even rural vacation experience in the beauty of places that remain unspoiled, steeped in history, legend, and tradition.

Famous tourist spots include Riace Marina, Roccella Ionica, and Marina di Gioiosa Ionica. From the small plain of Grotteria, one can reach Siderno, Locri, a Greek colony founded in the 7th century BC, as well as the communities of Sant'Ilario allo Ionio, Ardore Marina, and Bovalino. South of the Bonamico river, the most significant river of Aspromonte, extends the southernmost stretch of the Jasmine Coast, which ends at Capo Spartivento. This area features seaside locations such as Africo, Bianco, Brancaleone Marina, and Capo Ferruzzano, which, with its distinctive cliffs, breaks the monotony of the landscape. The Jasmine Riviera has repeatedly received the prestigious Blue Flags from Legambiente for its waters, which are among the cleanest and clearest in Calabria. The Archaeological Park of Locri Epizefiri holds valuable evidence of the glorious history of the Greek colony of Locri; the excavations of ancient Kaulon, now Monasterace, are particularly noteworthy; as well as the historic center of Gerace, known for its hundred churches, and Stilo, famous for the renowned "Cattolica."
