Conditions
Area city center
1. Take a dip at the beaches of Palau.
To name a few: La Sciumara is at the foot of the village, overlooks the island of Spargi, and can be reached on foot or by bike. Cala di Trana is enchanting with its white sand and crystal-clear waters, while the Talmone rocks and the nearby sandy stretch, a surfer's paradise, Porto Pollo (Isola dei Gabbiani), are also worth visiting.
2. After dinner, stroll through the stalls along the main street (Via Nazionale); every summer evening, a market featuring local artisans and more is set up here. You'll certainly find a small souvenir or gift to take home with you.
3. Spend an afternoon at the Monte Altura Fortress: a giant granite structure that overlooks the sea. Originally a military fortress from World War II, it is now open to anyone who wants to explore it. Inside, you can also find a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the various military constructions in the area, which began in the 1700s.
4. Visit the Tombs of the Giants in the Li Mizzani area and those at Sajacciu, and nearby is the rural church of San Giorgio. This place is said to emit purifying and healing magnetic energies. Regardless, the silence and total immersion in nature will provide you with a true moment of relaxation.
5. Take a sightseeing tour of the La Maddalena archipelago. At the port of Palau, numerous boats are available every morning for day cruises among the famous islands of the archipelago.
6. Enjoy an aperitif on the beach and drinks by the illuminated port. The Isola dei Gabbiani, as mentioned, is a haven for water sports enthusiasts like windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding. In the evenings, the wooden beach bars come alive with music and young people gathering to watch the sunset behind the nearby islands while enjoying drinks barefoot. For those looking for a more refined cocktail, the pubs at the port of Palau offer live music and great company.
7. Seafood dinner. There is no shortage of seafood restaurants here, serving delicious marine dishes paired with fine local whites (remember, you're in Gallura, the land of Vermentino). One of the most renowned is the restaurant Da Robertino, located on Via Nazionale. If you prefer to try a traditional Sardinian land-based menu, about a 15-minute drive away is Turismo Rurale Lu Salconi.
8. Visit the Ethnographic Museum of Palau, located in Loc. Montiggia. Here, you can see reproductions of some domestic environments and collections of tools retrieved from local artisan shops and ancient rural Gallurese homes (stazzi), telling the story of the town's origins.
9. Attend and participate in one of the Lantern shows, a festival of history, music, and words. Music is the muse inspiring this grand event, guiding its sailors towards safety like the light from a lighthouse, preserving the beauty found in verses and notes.
10. Hike to the Capo d’Orso rock. This rock has been a landmark for sailors since ancient times and symbolizes the city of Palau. You can get up close and take some photos… the view is guaranteed!
