La Chiesa di Sant'Agata al Carcere è costruita su ciò che resta del Bastione del Santo Carcere, appartenente alle mura di Carlo V del XVI secolo, che difendeva la porta nord (chiamata Porta del Re) della città di Catania. Secondo la tradizione in questo luogo venne tenuta prigioniera Sant'Agata prima di subire il martirio.
