Area suburbs
The story of Borghetto is that of an important crossing point and a disputed border area between opposing armies.
The landscape is still, timeless, and it brings us back to our need for sources, to our origins, like in every river myth where water and dreams merge.
Walking in Borghetto in the evening to see a sunset over the Mincio, or when the fog blurs the outlines of the houses, revealing only the Ghibelline battlements, is like getting lost in an imaginary Middle Ages.
Borghetto is just this handful of houses, an ancient village of mills in complete symbiosis with its river. A river idyll, with the three ancient mills seemingly emerging from the water.
The Visconti Bridge, an extraordinary fortified dam, built in 1393 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti's order, has been called an "ancient regime check-point".
Stretching 650 meters long and 25 meters wide, completed in 1395, it was connected to the overlying Scaliger Castle by two high crenellated walls and integrated into a fortified complex that extended for about 16 km.
The Scaliger Castle continues to dominate the Mincio Valley from the top of the hill with its towers.
Of its oldest part, the Round Tower, a unique construction dating back to the 12th century, remains, while the rest of the complex dates back to the 14th century.
It was equipped with three drawbridges, of which only one has been preserved.
Finally, inside the village, the Church of San Marco Evangelista is the neoclassical reconstruction (1759) of the ancient Romanesque parish dedicated to Santa Maria (11th century), of which two valuable 15th-century frescoes remain.
