On the edge of a ravine.
Gravina is a multifaceted city. It treasures memories and meanings. From any perspective there’s at least two sides of Gravina to discover. Gravina as ravine and Gravina as “grana dat et vina”. Gravina in Puglia and Gravina very close and similar to Basilicata. Gravina Murgiana. Gravina once called Sidion by The Greeks then Silvium by the Romans, very important stop on the Via Appia. Gravina under the sky and Gravina Sotterranea, a true underground city.
The history of Gravina finds it roots in the ancient Peucezia. Later on its culture was deeply influenced by Magna Grecia until Gravina became part of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Empire, Gravina was plundered by the Ostrogoths and Visigoths. For this reason the population started to inhabit the Grotte and then founded the historical districts of Piaggio and Fondovico.
Dark times ended when Federico II di Svevia chose Gravina as the General Curia of Apulia, Basilicata and Capitanata.
Gravina was born again. It soon became one of the most important cities for arts and culture. In 1294 the very first Fiera di San Giorgio was held here. The tradition of the fair is still alive and constantly growing.
During the 15th century Gravina also became Dukedom of the Orsini family and it was here that Pope Benedetto XIII was born.
For these and other reasons, Gravina can be thought of as an itinerary that starts from Botromagno, crosses the bridge and reaches the Norman Cathedral and the ancient Piaggio and Fondovico, the churches and the famous Museum “E. Pomarici Santomasi”. Among all the hidden treasures, Gravina Sotterranea is a must see.
