Area city center
Via Pomponazzo is located between the city centre and our lakes where tourists can walk or cycle. Walking along Via Pomponazzo towards the city you arrive in Piazza Sordello, the largest square in the city, dedicated to the poet Sordello. The Thursday morning market is held here and is also a venue for concerts and cultural events. Also in Piazza Sordello you can visit the Doge's Palace, where the Gonzaga family lived and ruled from 1328 to 1707. It has more than 500 rooms and contains a cycle of frescoes painted by Pisanello and commissioned by Gianfranco Gonzaga. The Castle of San Giorgio, which contains the most important works of art in Mantua, such as the Camera Picta or Camera Degli Sposi, painted by Mantegna between 1465 and 1474. The Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, the largest church in Mantua, where the blood of Christ is kept. It was built in 1046 by Leon Battista Alberti and was the first pre-Roman religious building dedicated to the saint of the same name. Nearby is the Bibiena Theatre which is bell-shaped and has several rows of wooden opera boxes. It was inaugurated on December 3, 1769. In the city centre we find Piazza delle Erbe and it is the second most important square in the city that leads to arcades where there are various types of shops, clothing and footwear boutiques, cafes, pizzerias and restaurants where you can enjoy numerous traditional dishes even outdoors. Nearby you can appreciate Palazzo della Ragione, Palazzo del Podestà and the Astronomical Clock Tower. A stone's throw from Piazza delle Erbe is the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, which will leave you breathless because it is the oldest church dating back to the year 1000.
